The three most popular mattress choices

The three most popular mattress choices

Did you know that the coil spring mattress was first introduced in the early 1860's and that more than 140 years later, this mattress is still the most popular? However, like just about everything, better technologies come along with time, and in this amount of time we've witnessed both the Industrial and Technological Revolution. News Flash: other mattress types are out there and each type claims to provide something, (it could be a discount; a more restful night sleep or something that doesn't create pressure points.)

Whatever floats your boat, just don't be seduced to buy a "cheap mattress" unless you test it out first. And this should be your mantra for all sleep surfaces including the ones to be discussed: coil spring, latex and memory foam.

About Coil Spring (Innerspring) Mattresses:

As mentioned this sleep surface was first patented over 140 years ago and continues to be the most popular. Today, this mattress can be used on a flat bed surface and for an adjustable frame, a specially made coil spring mattress is made. How it's constructed: Once coiled the metal is tempered to hold the coil firmness. A higher quality coil mattress will likely have a higher number of turns in the coil. Coils can either be connected together or remain independent, the latter being less likely to transfer motion. The more luxurious models are covered with a layer of memory foam, latex and / or a pillow top.

About Latex Mattresses:

Latex foam, is a naturally derived substance made from the milky sap of the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. This surface is flexible enough to be used on both flat and adjustable beds. Latex is a desirable product since it not only acts similarly to memory foam, conforming to your body and reducing pressure points, but is also hypo-allergenic. Mold, mildew and bacteria cannot live in latex foam and it is also very resistant to dust mites. Good news for those who are very sensitive or allergic to these factors. And no chemical smell!

About Memory Foam Mattresses:

Invented by NASA in the 1970's, memory foam was revised and launched into the commercial market by the Swedish company, Tempur-Pedic. Although Tempur-Pedic is still the best known brand in this category and the reigning leader of the high-end market, there are now plenty of knock off brands to choose from. Consumers can also purchase memory foam pillows and foam mattress toppers.
